work in progress

I began a new canvas some weeks ago. Ok ok... I know flowers are, for instance, a safe place for me to stay, though I believe after so many time not painting I deserve giving myself this right to be where I feel it is more comfortable. To be honest I am not quite sure whether I like it or not. It is just the begining. I am even less sure about to where it will lead me. Though I hope, posting it here will give me an extra strenght to keep it on going. I will talk more about it soon.

Maureen Bisilliat

In talking about foreigner's eye, there is someone I'd like to bring up here. Her name is Maureen Bisilliat. Although she has been born in England she lives in Brazil since the late 50's. She has adopted the country as her own country and for that the country has adopted her as well. Working here as a photograher for a local magazine, she travelled the country from North to South going even to those remote places producing a stunning profile of the country. She went beyond  its surface. She captured its complexity at that precise point in which is hidden a huge part of its immense beauty. There are several books she has published. She has given us a great legacy. Her pictures have an intense atmosphere and an incredible beauty. They can speak for themselves.

amizade || friendship

I have been away for a week as my dear friends from Belgium flew from so far just to visit me.
It was their first time out of Europe so I just felt like I should be totally available to show them everything I could in such a short time. For that I took some days off my work and this blog.
To me having them around was great joy! Not only because I read their coming as a huge demonstration of their friendship to me but also because I and João saw it as a great opportunity to show them how big and beautiful our city and country are in so many ways. I'd like to say thank you to them for having given us this time.
It was nice having had this chance of seeing my own city and my own country under a foreigner perspective.
Love is the word. True friendship is one of its faces!
Dear Ann & Christophe, you are welcome whenever you fancy coming here!

Amor é a palavra! A amizade verdadeira uma de suas faces!
Queridos Ann & Christophe, sejam bemvindos sempre que quiserem vir!

"I mourn the loss of thousands of precious lives,

but I will not rejoice in the death of one,

not even an enemy.

Returning hate for hate multiplies hate,

adding deeper darkness to a night already devoid of stars.

Darkness cannot drive out darkness:

only light can do that.

Hate cannot drive out hate:

only love can do that."

Martin Luther King, Jr

I have been following him through his blog for some months. His work is intriguing, enigmatic, even dark and sad but yet it is far beautiful, dense, rich in details and textures, sophisticated and full of humor. Hard to understand? Check it out! It worth it!
